Karun-4 double-arched concrete dam is the highest dam in Iran, constructed on the Karun river, located on the upstream of the confluence of the Karun and Monj rivers, 180 km southwest of Shahrekord city in Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari province.

 

The purpose for construction of this dam is using the Karun River hydroelectric potential and controlling upstream surface currents.


The project was awarded as the premier concrete project in Iran in 2010 in the 8th anniversary of Iranian Concrete Conference. This dam was impounded on April 2010 and officially operated on July 2010.

 

 

Project Technical Specification:

 

Dam type: Double arched concrete Dam

Dam height: 230 meters from the foundation

Crest width: 7 meters

Width of the dam bottom: 34.5 meters

Crest length: 440 meters

 

Diversion System: 2 No. of tunnels, each 9.5 m dia. and total length of 1364m. The Cofferdam has 45m Rockfill body covered with a soil-cement layer.

 

Type of spillway: In right abutment, Ogee with radial gate and free over dam crest (5 openings with dimensions 12 and 10 meters)

Spillway discharge capacity: 9600 m3/s

Power plant capacity installed: 1,000 MW

Annual energy production: 2,107 GWh

 

Total reservoir volume:                2,300,000,000 cubic meters

Total excavation volume:            1,850,000 cubic meters

Total volume of Embankment:     850,000 cubic meters

Total volume of concrete:            1,800,000 cubic meters
